Abstract Spinach is one of the important economic leafy vegetables in China, with rich nutritional content. With the increasing planting area of spinach year by year, the races of spinach downy mildew pathogen Peronospora effuse are constantly updated, and the occurrence of downy mildew is also becoming increasingly serious, causing significant losses to spinach production.Identifying the races of spinach downy mildew pathogen, screening resistant genes, and breeding resistant varieties are the prerequisites and foundations for solving this problem. This review introduces the differentiation status of Peronospora effuse races, inoculation identification methods, disease index standards and disease resistance grading. It reviews the research progress of breeding process of resistance to downy mildew in spinach, construction of molecular markers, location and analysis of candidate genes, and analyzes the main problems existing in current spinach breeding for resistance to downy mildew. Finally,it looks forward to future development trends.
