3 Relationship between Fruit Texture and Tissue Structures,Fiber Content,Pectin Content on Cucumber

Fruit texture crisp has deep relations with flesh cell structure, fiber and pectin contents by analysing these indexes of cucumber varieties with different texture. The fruits are more crisp and have better texture, which have thinner epidermis, quicker volume expanding rate of thin-wall cells,more pulp cells with round or nearly round shape. With higher fiber, lower pectin contents the fruits are more stiff.

8 Heterosis of Node of the First Female Flower and Number of Female Flowers in Bitter Gourd (Momordica charan-tica L. )

Eight inbred lines of green bitter gourd were divided into two groups and 15 crosses were made, heterosis of node of 1st female flower and number of female flowers at earlier stage were investigated. The results showed that node of 1st female flower of 6 crosses had negative heterosis over mid-parent,and 13 crosses had negative heterosis superior parent, and 4 crosses was lower than small parent; number of female flowers of 5 corsses had positive heterosis over mid-parent, and 4 crosses had positive heteros...

10 Effects of Silicon on Growth and Active Oxygen Scavenging System of Cucumber Seedlings

The effects of silicon on the growth and active oxygen scavenging system of cucumber seedlings were studied in a solution culture system. The results showed that the application of 1.7 mmol · L-1 Si increased plant growth, chlorophyll content, AsA content,and the activities of SOD,POD and CAT,and decreased MDA content.

13 Physical and Chemical Properties of Soilless Culture Substrate and Their Effects on Physiological Characteristics of Wasabi

Physical and chemical properties of different mixed substrate and its effect on wasabi were studied. The results indicated that the physical and chemical properties of the substrate composed of reed, Vemiculite, sand (1:2: 1) was the best one. It increased contents of chlorophyll and root activities, improved the growth and the swelling of wasabi rhizome, decreased the growing period of wasabi, it also avoided the incidence of diseases and insects in high temperature season and increased yield.

The resistance of the Chinese kale and the offspring of interspecific hybrids of Chinese kale x Flowering Chinese cabbage to Turnip mosaic virus ( TuMV) were studied. The results were as follows: Chinese kale possessed nearly immune resistance to TuMV-Youcai Strain in Guangzhou. Liaocong No. 2 was developed by crossing male sterile line 244A as female parent with inbred line Liao 95-4-4-8-6 as male parent. The 244A was selected through crossing natural male sterile plant with fertile plant of welsh onion donglingbai and backcrossing for several successive generations. It grew vigorously and uniformly, the plant was 115 cm high (maxmum 160 cm) ,the scallion stalk was 45-55 cm in height and 3. 0 -4. 5 cm in diameter,no-till. Yangchunhuang is the result of several generation system selection from crossing Gangcong No. 2 with Hanchengjizao. The growing period is 220 days and 15 - 18 days earlier than Gangcong No. 2. Chaotianhuang is a new sweet corn F1 hybrid developed by crossing inbred line Y101 with Y22. Y101 and Y22 were derived from varieties introduced from America and Sri Lanka. It has a cylinder-shape ear which is about 20 cm in length and 4. 5 cm in diameter, with a sugar content up to 23% ,it can be consumed both in green or after cooked. Its planting area includes South and South-west China and its fresh yield is about 15 t · hm-2.
