Abstract In a survey during 2006-2009, 27 pepper(Capsicum anmuum L.)samples with viral symptoms collected from the Hexi Area of Gansu Province were detected by DAS-ELISA with antibodies against nine plant viruses. The results showed that these samples were infected by the viruses of Tobacco mosaic virus(TMV), Cucumber mosaic virus(CMV), Pepper mild mottle virus(PMMoV), Potato virus Y(PVY)and Tobacco etch virus(TEV). TMV and CMV were the major viruses infecting pepper in Hexi Area with relevance ratio of 44.4 % and 33.3 %, respectively. Moreover, TMV, CMV, TEV and PMMoV in 20 samples among the 27 samples were tested by RT-PCR. The results indicated that these samples were infected by TMV, CMV, TEV and PMMoV. Tests for Tomato spotted wilt virus(TSWV), Potato virus X(PVX), Alfalfa mosaic virus(AMV)and Broad bean wilt virus(BBWV)showed that these viruses were not present in these collected pepper samples.
